Two figures in Renaissance dress, lace collars and pearls, their faces broken open in the way only George Condo breaks a face: profiles stacked inside profiles, eyes multiplied, a mouth that belongs to someone else. Condo calls the method psychological cubism, and here it meets the old masters he has long drawn on, so that the picture reads at once as a court portrait and as a nervous breakdown.
A hard-ground etching with drypoint, the finest of the printmaking techniques for line, on heavy Hahnemühle paper. Edition of only 25, signed, numbered and dated by the artist.
